Quo Vadis Polonia?
– rozmowa wśród Polonii Amerykańskiej o systemie politycznym dla Polski

Obserwując zmagania polityczne w Polsce i widząc tę ala-Wyspiański niemoc, pytania i odpowiedzi nasuwają się same. Brak Gospodarza, aż kole w oczy. Prezydent ma silny mandat, lecz prawie zero sprawczości. A jego inicjatywa napotyka obojętność, w najlepszym wypadku. Jego prawo, to VETO i mianowania. Sejmokracja Hamowana!

Wady: Koncentracja władzy u prezydenta niesie ryzyko autorytaryzmu, zwłaszcza jeśli prezydent mianuje 80 posłów (to ok. 17% Sejmu – dość dużo).

Struktura Sejmu i zakaz łączenia mandatów z funkcją ministra

Zalety: 460 posłów to sporo – redukcja do 230 (190 + 40) mogłaby obniżyć koszty i usprawnić prace. To mogłoby profesjonalizować administrację.

Twoja propozycja (16 województw × 2 = 32 + 1 z Warszawy = 33) czyni go mniejszym i bardziej federalnym, co lepiej reprezentuje regiony.

To mogłoby prowadzić do sporów.

Wady: Marszałek Sejmu to rola neutralna, moderująca debaty. Jeśli jest wiceprezydentem, mogłoby to upolitycznić Sejm i faworyzować partię prezydenta. W sytuacjach konfliktu (np. impeachment) to mogłoby komplikować sprawy.

Nominacje sędziów i KRS

Plus: więcej odpowiedzialności indywidualnej (jednomandatowe okręgi) i stabilność (długie kadencje KRS).

Aby to wdrożyć, potrzeba zmian konstytucyjnych – referendum lub 2/3 w Sejmie. Co myślisz o dodaniu mechanizmów kontroli, np. łatwiejszego impeachmentu prezydenta czy silniejszej roli TK? Ciekawy pomysł, ale wymagałby debaty, by uniknąć pułapek.

To zachowa prostotę, unikając oskarżeń o faworyzowanie.

Inspiracja do działania

Potencjalne ulepszenia: Integruj elementy pro-rynkowe, np. daj prezydentowi prawo do tworzenia specjalnych stref ekonomicznych bez zgody Sejmu (z limitem).

W Polsce, z jej zależnością od eksportu do UE, supremacja prawa krajowego mogłaby komplikować dostęp do rynków, więc warto dodać klauzulę o “ochronie interesów gospodarczych” w konstytucji.

Ulepszenie: dodaj mechanizm referendalny dla kluczowych umów międzynarodowych, by obywatele decydowali – to zwiększyłoby inspirację i legitymizację.

To mogłoby uczynić sądownictwo bardziej demokratyczne i odpowiedzialne przed elektoratem, inspirując obywateli do udziału (wybory sędziów jak w niektórych stanach USA, np. Teksas).

W Polsce, z polaryzacją, to mogłoby prowadzić do “sądów partyjnych”. Sugestia: Ogranicz wybór do sędziów sądów niższych instancji, a wyższe (np. SN) zostaw mianowane przez KRS.

Ulepszenie: Dodaj wymóg, by nominowani mieli doświadczenie ekonomiczne, weryfikowane przez niezależną komisję.

Impeachment via referendum i obalenie prezydenta

Zalety: Dynamizuje system – politycy musieliby działać, bo groźba referendum motywuje do efektywności.

Ale wymagają precyzji, by uniknąć destabilizacji (np. zbyt łatwe obalenia). To mogłoby uczynić Polskę modelem “demokracji bezpośredniej” z silnym prezydentem.

To rozsądne uzupełnienia – dłuższe kadencje sędziów zapewniają niezależność, ograniczenie nominacji prezydenckich zapobiega nadużyciom, a regulacje referendów unikają chaosu.

Wady: 10 lat to długo – jeśli sędzia okaże się niekompetentny, trudno go usunąć (potrzeba mechanizmu dyscyplinarnego). Wybory sędziów mogłyby nadal upolitycznić sądownictwo, zwłaszcza w polaryzowanej Polsce. Sugestia: Dodaj rotację – co 10 lat połowa sędziów do reelekcji, by uniknąć masowych zmian, i wymóg apolityczności (zakaz członkostwa w partiach).

To wzmacnia prostotę: jasne reguły sukcesji, bez luk.

Zalety: Prostota i efektywność – mniej referendów oznacza mniej kosztów i zakłóceń (np. w gospodarce: stabilny budżet bez ciągłych głosowań).

125 Konstytucji RP). To sensowne uzupełnienia – ograniczają nominacje do sytuacji ekstremalnych, co zapobiega nadużyciom, a otwarcie referendów na kwestie fiskalne zwiększa partycypację obywatelską w gospodarce. Pasuje to do celów prostoty (jasne reguły), efektywności (szybsze decyzje w kryzysach) i dynamiki wzrostu (bezpośredni wpływ na podatki mógłby stymulować reformy ekonomiczne).

Wady: Ryzyko nadużyć – prezydent mógłby “wymyślić” przeszkodę, by przedłużyć władzę (np. poprzez dekret o stanie wyjątkowym). W historii (np. w Ameryce Łacińskiej) takie mechanizmy prowadziły do autorytaryzmu.

Grecja przed kryzysem). W polaryzowanej Polsce to mogłoby pogłębiać podziały, np. bogatsze regiony vs. biedniejsze.

To mogłoby uczynić Polskę bardziej konkurencyjną, ale wymaga bezpieczników, by uniknąć destabilizacji.

Referendum odwołując uprzednie referendum musi mieć większą frekwencję i wyższy wynik.

Wymagania dla członków RPP: doświadczenie edukacyjne i biznesowe w finansach i przedsiębiorczości, możliwość członkostwa w organizacjach pracodawców

Jak to pasuje do modelu: W podziale RPP (1/3 nominacje prezydenta, Sejmu i Senatu) dodajesz kryteria kwalifikacyjne – edukacja (np. dyplom z ekonomii, finansów) plus praktyka biznesowa (np. doświadczenie w zarządzaniu firmą, bankowości).

Zalety: Zwiększa efektywność – nominowani z realnym doświadczeniem lepiej radziliby sobie z polityką monetarną (np. stopy procentowe, inflacja), co stabilizuje walutę i wspiera przedsiębiorczość.

Sugestia: Zdefiniuj minimalne kryteria (np. 5 lat w biznesie, tytuł magistra ekonomii) i dodaj weryfikację przez niezależną komisję (np. z NBP), by uniknąć nadużyć.

Inspiruje: zachęca neutralnych prawników do kandydowania, zwiększając różnorodność. W porównaniu do USA (gdzie sędziowie bywają polityczni), to mogłoby uczynić Polskę modelem stabilności.

Wady: Szeroka definicja “działaczy” (np. jedna demonstracja w młodości) mogłaby wykluczyć wielu kandydatów, prowadząc do braku chętnych. W okręgach wyborczych to trudne do weryfikacji – kto sprawdza przeszłość? Ryzyko nadużyć: opozycja mogłaby dyskredytować sędziów fałszywymi oskarżeniami. Sugestia: Utwórz komisję etyczną (np. pod SN) do weryfikacji z możliwością apelacji. Wyjątek dla aktywności niepartyjnych (np. protesty ekologiczne bez politycznego kontekstu), by nie ograniczać praw obywatelskich.

Referendum odwołujące poprzednie: większa frekwencja i wyższy wynik

+10%) i wynik (np. 60% zamiast 50%). To stabilizuje decyzje, integrując z impeachmentem czy sukcesją prezydencką.

Zalety: Prostota i efektywność – zapobiegają “ping-pongowi” referendów, co oszczędza koszty i unika chaosu (kluczowe dla gospodarki: stabilne prawo podatkowe przyciąga inwestorów). Inspiruje do działania: wyższe progi motywują do większej mobilizacji, zwiększając legitymizację. Dynamika wzrostu: chroni reformy ekonomiczne przed łatwym cofnięciem, np. ulgi podatkowe raz zatwierdzone trudniej odwołać. Inspiracja z Kalifornii, gdzie podobne mechanizmy stabilizują inicjatywy obywatelskie.

Wady: Wysokie progi mogłyby blokować zmiany – jeśli pierwsze referendum miało niską frekwencję, drugie byłoby trudne, co hamowałoby elastyczność w kryzysach (np. dostosowanie podatków do inflacji). W polaryzowanej Polsce to mogłoby faworyzować status quo. Sugestia: Określ skalę (np. frekwencja +5%, wynik +10% większości), i dodaj wyjątek dla referendów konstytucyjnych. Połącz z cyfrowym głosowaniem, by ułatwić wyższą frekwencję.

To mogłoby uczynić Polskę efektywniejszą, ale wymaga precyzyjnych zapisów konstytucyjnych, by uniknąć interpretacyjnych sporów.

Zalety

Prostota i efektywność: Proces jest jasny i liniowy – RPP filtruje kandydatów (np. 3-5 osób z wymaganymi kwalifikacjami), prezydent wybiera i mianuje, Senat głosuje (np. zwykłą większością).

To zachęca do aktywności obywatelskiej w gospodarce, np. poprzez organizacje pracodawców.

Wady i ryzyka

Mechanizmy bezpieczników: Wymóg, by kandydaci na prezesa spełniali te same kryteria co członkowie RPP (edukacja + biznes). Jeśli Senat odrzuci nominację, prezydent mógłby mianować tymczasowo na 6 miesięcy, z obowiązkiem ponownej procedury. To zachowa efektywność.

Integracja z referendum: Referendum w sprawie prezesa NBP, jeśli nominacja budzi kontrowersje (np. po petycji obywatelskiej), z limitem raz w roku. To zwiększyłoby inspirację i legitymizację.

To pasuje do stabilności gospodarczej.

Ogólnie, ta propozycja wzmacnia system prezydencki, czyniąc NBP bardziej zintegrowanym z gospodarką i suwerennością, ale wymaga równowagi, by uniknąć polityzacji. To mogłoby uczynić Polskę bardziej konkurencyjną monetarnie, np. w obliczu wyzwań UE. Co myślisz o dodaniu roli Sejmu w procesie (np. konsultacje), by zrównoważyć Senat?

Dekrety prezydenckie z mocą ustawy we wszystkich kompetencjach

W gospodarce: dekrety podatkowe mogłyby szybko stymulować wzrost (np. obniżka CIT), a zatwierdzenie zapewnia stabilność. Inspiruje: zachęca do debaty parlamentarnej, zwiększając zaangażowanie.

To mogłoby uczynić Polskę bardziej elastyczną niż obecny system, ale wymaga precyzyjnych zapisów konstytucyjnych, by uniknąć nadużyć (np. definicja “kompetencji” prezydenta).

Pasuje to idealnie do Twojej wizji prostego, efektywnego modelu prezydenckiego z naciskiem na stabilność i suwerenność, bo zapobiega potencjalnym nadużyciom, jednocześnie zachowując dynamikę w codziennym rządzeniu.

Ogólne refleksje i sugestie

To wspiera wzrost: stabilna konstytucja przyciąga inwestycje, bo zapewnia przewidywalność. Aby to wdrożyć praktycznie:

Definicja i nadzór: Dodaj w konstytucji jasną klauzulę (np.

Ulepszenie: Integruj z referendum – jeśli dekret budzi wątpliwości konstytucyjne, obywatele mogliby go zakwestionować via petycja referendalna (z limitem raz w roku).

Wady: Dwie kadencje to 10 lat – w dynamicznej Polsce (migracje, urbanizacja) okręgi mogłyby stać się nieadekwatne demograficznie (np. przeludnione miasta vs. wyludnione wsie).

To uniknie politycznych manipulacji, a prezydent mógłby zatwierdzać dekretem.

Wady: W mobilnym społeczeństwie (migracje wewnętrzne) to mogłoby wykluczać niedawno przeprowadzonych, prowadząc do niskiej frekwencji. Ryzyko: biurokratyczne spory o “zamieszkanie”.

Sugestia: Dodaj okres karencji (np. 6 miesięcy zamieszkania przed wyborami) i cyfrową rejestrację (e-voting), by ułatwić. To zwiększy inspirację wśród młodych.

Zalety: Inspiruje do integracji – imigranci (np.

Ryzyko: manipulacje (np. masowa migracja do okręgów).

Dodaj wymóg znajomości języka/polskiego prawa, by uniknąć nadużyć. To zrównoważy inkluzję z ochroną obywateli.

Inspiruje: zachęca do utrzymywania obywatelstwa i remitentów (przekazy pieniężne wspierają gospodarkę).

Teraz ograniczasz je do granic województw – np. Mazowsze miałoby więcej okręgów niż Lubuskie, proporcjonalnie do populacji.

Zalety: Prostota i efektywność – łatwiejsze zarządzanie wyborami, mniej sporów o granice (gerrymandering trudniejszy).

Dodaj wymóg egzaminu z polskiego/języka, by zapewnić integrację. To zmniejszy ryzyka, zachowując korzyści gospodarcze.

Zalety: Supremacja i efektywność – zapewnia lojalność wobec Polski, co wzmacnia decyzje w gospodarce (np. ministrowie bez zagranicznych wpływów) i polityce zagranicznej (dekrety prezydenckie, nominacje ambasadorów). Inspiruje: podkreśla narodowy charakter władzy, co mogłoby zwiększyć zaufanie obywateli. Prostota: jasny wymóg, łatwy do weryfikacji.

Dodaj okres karencji (np. 5 lat bez drugiego obywatelstwa). To zachowa suwerenność, ale otworzy na talenty.

Ogólnie, te zmiany czynią Twój model bardziej narodowo zorientowanym i lokalnym, co mogłoby wzmocnić odpowiedzialność (głos podatników) i stabilność (wyłączne obywatelstwo), wspierając wzrost poprzez motywację do wkładu w państwo. To wymagałoby zmian konstytucyjnych z referendum. Co myślisz o wpływie na frekwencję wyborczą? Albo jak widzisz weryfikację płacenia podatków (np. via system cyfrowy)?

Archangels – the guardians of presence in the age of God’s silence

They are the answer to the question of whether God abandoned us.

  1. Introduction – God’s silence and the dark night of faith

God’s silence is the deepest paradox of contemporary spirituality. At a time when humanity has already proclaimed all its slogans, established all its ideologies and even created electronic idols in the form of algorithms to determine truth and falsehood, God remains silent. This silence, however, is not emptiness, but a burden that weighs on the heart like a starless night.

Holy mystics call it the “dark night of faith,” but we, the children of the post-truth and post-Christian era, experience it more acutely because we have deprived ourselves of the language to describe it. Edith Stein reminded us that the night of faith is not only an experience of absence, but also participation in Christ’s abandonment — and it is precisely in this deepest silence that space opens up for encounter.

This experience is not unique to the Western world: the echo of God’s silence also resounds in the temples of Asia, in the mosques of the Middle East, and in African communities, where the question of meaning and presence returns just as suddenly and painfully. Silence is the common language of all humanity. This silence is like a stone submerged in water: it seems soundless, yet it spreads in circular rings that reach further than our words.

And it is in this deep silence, where every person trembles with fear, wondering if they are talking to themselves, that a subtle presence appears: angels. They are the answer to the question that haunts us in moments of darkness: Has God abandoned us, or has He hidden Himself too deeply for us to hear Him?

Angels are not a “cheerful metaphor” for children or a baroque ornament of piety. Rather, they are a sign that in the most radical abandonment, there is someone who still watches over us. Their presence is like a whisper in the darkness—inaudible to those who expect a roar, but salvific to those who know how to be silent with the silent God.

Modern man has learned to treat the night as a space for entertainment, illuminated by city lights, but the spiritual night cannot be fooled so easily. It is a night when all the spotlights go out and only the echo of one’s own fears remains.

It is then that the archangels become a bridge: Michael, Gabriel, and Raphael—not as cultural figures, but as a living response that God’s silence is not absence, but a test. Angels are comfort in the deepest sense: a reminder that even silence is inhabited.

  1. The beginnings of the cult of the Archangels

The beginnings of the cult of the archangels are like the first lights glowing in the dark cave of history. In Judaism, their presence is not a poetic ornament, but a dramatic sign: in the Book of Daniel, Michael appears as the defender of the Nation, a guardian in times when kingdoms fall and empires roll over Israel like a steamroller.

This is not a fairy tale about winged guardians, but a reminder that even in the shadow of empires there is a force that does not succumb to the logic of power. In the Book of Tobit, Raphael guides the young man on a journey – seemingly familial and practical, yet full of metaphysical consequences: the journey in the company of an angel is an image of life itself, which always takes place “with a guide.”

Christianity adopts this tradition and immediately gives it new intensity. Gabriel becomes the herald of the Incarnation – not only the bearer of a message, but the medium of the very logic of God, who decided to enter into human frailty.

Michael, depicted in Eastern iconography and in Western shrines, is not just a warrior with a sword – he is the embodiment of the struggle for meaning when an entire civilization seems to be on the brink of collapse. Raphael, although less present in Western liturgy, still reminds us that religion is not only the theology of abstraction, but also the care of the body and soul—of the wounds that life constantly inflicts.

Early Christian communities understood this better than we do: archangels were not only theological figures for them, but a practical experience. Michael – as the patron saint of those who must defend their faith in the face of persecution. Gabriel – as a guarantee that every annunciation, though it begins with fear, ends with a promise.

Raphael – as a reminder that community cannot exist without healing each other’s wounds. The symbolic role of the archangels was therefore to organize the spiritual DNA of Christianity: struggle, truth, and healing. These are the three pillars that allowed the nascent Church to survive storms and empires, while remaining a place where man is not alone in the silence of God.

Today’s pop culture masquerades as the sacred: the word icon, which meant a window to eternity, now means a celebrity or a pictogram. Similarly, angels have been reduced to decorations, whereas in tradition they have always been a real presence.

  1. Michael – defender during the fall

Archangel Michael is not only a figure of spiritual combat – he is the patron saint of human agency itself, when it does not stop at the material realm, but opens up to transcendence. He is not the patron of abstract struggle, but the guardian of the boundary where man decides whether his creative abilities will be cooperation with the Creator or betrayal of Him. Aristotelian techne – art, skill, the power to shape reality – was given to man as a gift of participation in the work of creation.

But the gift can be distorted. The same fire that warms the house can turn it to ashes. The same hammer that shapes a bell for a cathedral can forge chains for a camp. At this moment, techne trembles like a taut string: it can sound a hymn, but it can also snap with a crack that leaves only silence.

That is why the civilization of the world after Christ needed a guardian from the very beginning. The genius of reason and the power of hands were not enough. A sword was needed, one that stood at the border in every era and reminded us: this is where creativity ends and pride begins; this is where techne ends and idolatry begins. Michael was precisely that sword. That is why his sanctuaries – Monte Gargano, Mont Saint-Michel, Skellig Michael – are arranged in a line like a luminous axis, like a geometric sign inscribed in the body of Europe.

This is no coincidence: the West was drawn with its blade.

Without this blade, techne becomes cunning. With it, it becomes co-creation. Michael reminds us that man can possess all the machines in the world, but if he does not know the limits, he will become the manager of emptiness. However, if they trust the guardian, every creative act—from cathedrals to scriptoria, from hymns to universities—will be proof that reason and faith, matter and the sacred, can still coexist.

And perhaps this is why Western civilization emerged at the point where these two orders were intertwined: techne – the Greek belief in the power of human reason and hands – with the Christian certainty that there is angelic protection, symbolized by Michael. Reason shaped matter, but angels ensured that man did not succumb to pride and consider himself God. The West grew up in cathedrals, universities, and monastic scriptoria, not in pyramids or tyrants’ palaces, because knowledge was always protected by the sacred, by liturgy, by the awareness that even the most precise instrument is nothing compared to the angelic sword.

Michael thus stands at the source of civilization not only as a warrior in heaven, but as a guardian of balance on earth: he reminds us that human development—our ability to subdue matter—only makes sense if we do not lose sight of the source of all existence. Without faith, techne degenerates into technocracy, into a cold machine that does not defend man but manipulates him. We see this today in the age of algorithms, where reason detached from transcendence has become a tool of enslavement rather than freedom.

Therefore, Michael’s shrines, which form a straight line like a heavenly loxodrome, can be read as a sign of spiritual geometry: Western civilization was “drawn” with his sword. It was he who set the course so that Aristotle’s techne would not turn into a trap, but would become a collaboration with the God’s plan. Michael reminds us that man can possess all skills, all inventions, all the power of engineering, but without faith he will only become the manager of emptiness. With faith, however, he will become a builder of a world that makes sense.

We see this particularly today, when techne—detached from the sacrum—becomes an autonomous weapon that decides life and death without the involvement of conscience, genetic engineering that attempts to create life according to its own standards, or algorithms that control public opinion like herds of passive individuals. This is no longer neutral progress: it is the degeneration of techne into a mechanism of power, which Michael confronts with his sword, reminding us that without being rooted in God, human reason becomes a tool of darkness.

Michael is the archetype of the Warrior – from Mesopotamian tales of the battle against chaos, through the Norse Thor, to Christian sanctuaries. In every culture, there is an image of a being who defends the border of the world. In Christianity, this archetype was given a name and a face.

  1. Gabriel – the herald of meaning in an age of appearances

Gabriel is the voice that enters into the very heart of human fear and chaos, not to deliver yet another message among thousands, but to remind us that there is one Word—and that this Word became flesh. The Annunciation of Mary marks the beginning of a revolution that the world cannot comprehend: here is the divine Logos, the foundation of the cosmos, no longer speaking through thunder on Sinai or through philosophical systems, but through a modest fiat uttered in a house in Nazareth.

Gabriel is therefore not a messenger of information – he is a messenger of meaning. Here we can recall Edmund Husserl’s intuition: consciousness is always directed toward meaning (Sinngebung). Gabriel makes this present—he does not add data, but reveals the horizon of meaning in which man finds direction.

This is the opposite of the present day. Our world is drowning in words, messages, notifications. Gabriel does not come with another batch of news, but with one word that cuts through the chaos like lightning. Imagine a person sitting in front of a screen at night, endlessly scrolling through a stream of images and headlines. There is noise all around, but emptiness inside.

And suddenly, one sentence appears – quiet, unlike the others: “Do not be afraid.” This is not an advertising slogan, nor is it a political slogan. It is the Word that restores direction to the heart. This is how Gabriel works: among billions of messages, he points to one Word that does not perish and that gives meaning to everything.

This is where the theme of techne returns. Aristotle believed that through techne, man gains agency over the world – and this is true. But techne itself will never say “why.”  It is Gabriel – the herald – who gives the answer that no system can generate: he gives meaning.

The West arose because techne was attuned to faith – to the belief that every creative act has its telos, its ultimate goal, which cannot be contained within the logic of consumption or the mathematics of profitability. Michael protected techne from turning into pride; Gabriel showed where this path leads.

So we can say that Western civilization was the child of this dual protection: Michael’s guard and Gabriel’s word. Techne needed meaning, and meaning needed agency. Only in their union could man build something that transcended mere utility – cathedrals, universities, the entire architecture of the world, in which the sacrum and the ratio intertwined like body and soul.

Today, when techne is once again adrift without an anchor, when algorithms pretend to have meaning but in fact produce only appearances, the need for Gabriel becomes dramatically urgent. For only he can interrupt the noise of information with a single word: Fear not. And that means: do not believe that you are alone in a world of appearances. True meaning still exists, although you need to have the courage to hear it.

Therefore, in an age of appearances, the most important thing is not to multiply messages, but to be able to pause on a single word. Gabriel’s silence is not emptiness—it is a pause in which a person hears something that comes neither from the market nor from an algorithm. It is in this pause, shorter than a breath, that the space of meaning opens up. And then Mary’s fiat does not remain a memory from centuries ago, but becomes a call today as well: in a world of information overload, to dare to hear the one word that gives everything direction.

Gabriel is the archetype of the Messenger – from Hermes and Thoth to the prophets who repeated in every age that the true word is not lost. In Christianity, this archetype received its final content: the annunciation that turned the cosmos into a home.

  1. Raphael – healer of human wounds

Raphael is an angel who comes not with a sword or with thunderous words, but with balm. His name, God heals, expresses the quietest and at the same time most radical mission. For is this not where the truth about modern man is revealed – that he is not so much a warrior or a builder as a wounded man? Europe, which wanted to be a continent of reason, ends up as a continent of depression, loneliness, and crumbling bonds. Man has mastered the art of subjugating matter (techne), but he no longer knows how to heal his own heart.

In the Book of Tobit, Raphael appears in everyday gestures – he guides a young man, heals his father, protects a marriage from a demonic force. These are not “great events,” they are the essence of human life: the journey, family, illness, fear. Raphael shows that God does not heal man through abstract systems, but through presence, through accompaniment. In a world where medicine can transplant organs but cannot respond to the loneliness of the patient, Raphael remains a figure of integral healing – of body and soul, memory and relationships.

Here again we touch on the foundation of Western civilization. If Michael was the guardian and Gabriel the herald of meaning, then Raphael is the one who brings people together when they fall apart. The development of the West was not only the work of technical genius or a system of ideas – it was also the fruit of care. Monastic infirmaries, hospitals founded by religious orders, the entire tradition of caring for the sick and the poor – this was the embodiment of Raphael’s care in the fabric of society. Reason and faith found their human synthesis here: the techne of medicine combined with faith in the dignity of every person.

Today, human suffering is even deeper: it is a wound to our identity. People no longer know who they are, torn between body and soul, between consciousness and technology. Algorithms can predict our choices, but they cannot cure loneliness; pharmaceuticals can suppress pain, but they cannot restore meaning. That is why Raphael is the angel that the modern world needs most – because he does not bring new technology, but reminds us that God heals.

This is not a slogan – it is the hard truth: without healing that comes from above, man cannot heal himself, even if he knows all the procedures and has all the means. Viktor Frankl, who survived the concentration camps, repeated that a person can only be saved if they find meaning even in suffering. Raphael embodies this truth in a supernatural dimension: he heals not through technology, but by restoring the meaning of existence.

The image of Raphael was best understood by those who established the first Christian hospitals. In the dark corridors of monasteries, amid the smell of herbs and candles, not only the wounds of the body but also those of the soul were treated. Each dressing was a prayer, each cup of water a gesture of faith that God also heals through human hands. These places were more than just medicine: they were a visible sign that no pain is abandoned. Right where the world saw only sickness and death, Raphael stood by – quietly but tangibly.

Rafał is an angel who places his hand on the heart of civilization and says: your wound is not incurable, but it will not disappear on its own. You can numb it with technology, you can cover it with ideology, you can turn it into a “new identity” – but it will still bleed until you recognize that you need a doctor greater than yourself. In this sense, Raphael is an angel of the future: without him, our civilization will fall apart like a sick organism that has refused to take its medicine.

Raphael’s face can be recognized in simple stories: in the gaze of a patient who waits for test results in a hospital corridor at night and silently asks if anyone still remembers him; in a child locked in a room, scrolling through images on a screen, looking for at least one message that his life has meaning; in a refugee who, on the border between the world and human indifference, holds a sick child in his arms. In these places, no one expects theology or ideology—they expect touch, presence, healing. And it is precisely where people feel most abandoned that Raphael lays his hands: quietly but tangibly, reminding us that God heals not with abstraction but with presence.

Raphael is the archetype of a doctor – from Asclepius in Greece, through Amazonian shamans, to Christian hospitals. Wherever people recognized their wounds, the image of a healing hand appeared. In the biblical tradition, this archetype was given a name, and in Christianity, it was given full meaning.

  1. Angels and the dark night of faith

In 1972, Pope Paul VI uttered words that went down in history as an echo of prophetic lament: “Through some crack, the stench of Satan has entered the Church.” This was not a metaphor—it was a diagnosis. It was not barbarian armies, but invisible smoke permeating the interior of the Church, blurring its liturgy, decomposing its language and faith. Benedict XVI returned to this vision, speaking of the “stench of sulfur” that can be seen in relativism, in the trivialization of the Gospel, in a liturgy that turns worship into spectacle. Both popes saw the same thing: an internal decay that suffocates man more than external persecution.

And that is precisely why God did not leave man to his own devices. Angels are not a product of worship that the faithful invented to comfort themselves in the darkness. They are a gift from God—messengers who were given to us so that we would know that we are not defenseless in the night. Michael, Gabriel, and Raphael are therefore not “symbols” but real participants in the history of salvation. They exist because God knew that a time of smoke would come and that in that smoke man would need a guide, a warrior, and a doctor.

Therefore, the remedy for the “smoke of Satan” is not psychology or crisis management strategy. The remedy is faith in angels – not childish, not fragile, not reduced to sentimental images. Exorcistic faith: the awareness that in a moment of crisis, one can call on the name of Michael to stand against the dragon; that one can hear the voice of Gabriel, who in the chaos reminds us that the Word has meaning; that one can experience the touch of Raphael, who heals what human medicine cannot heal.

Angels are not a fairy tale, but an answer to the night. They were given by God so that we would not mistake darkness for the end of everything. By rejecting them, man is left alone, and the smoke does not ask if anyone will accept it—it suffocates without asking. By accepting them, the night is no longer an abyss, but a path.

This is where the difference between porcelain faith and exorcistic faith is revealed. Porcelain faith gives rise to images, sentimental figurines, and words that shatter at the first blow of suffering. Exorcistic faith needs no ornamentation – it manifests itself when a man in the ruins of his home grabs a rosary, when a mother at her child’s grave calls on Michael to stand by her side, when a prayer resounds in a prisoner’s cell, a prayer that is not aesthetic but a struggle. It is a faith that does not pretend that the dark night does not exist – on the contrary, it enters into it completely and discovers that an angel truly watches over the darkness. Without it, there remains porcelain that crumbles in our hands. With it, there is a path that leads through the night to the morning.

  1. Historical and political perspective – Archangels in an era of collapse

We live in a time when all the threads of history and technology have come together in a dark knot. Geopolitics is creaking, economies are cracking like fragile shells, and the cognitive shift – caused by artificial intelligence and algorithms – is changing not only the way we work, but the very definition of what it means to be human. Traditional professions, which for centuries gave meaning and rhythm to existence, are disappearing like old crafts in the shadow of factories. People, deprived of their roots in work and community, slip into depression and a sense of uselessness. The violence of pop culture, which instead of educating degrades, and instead of beauty produces filth, completes this picture. The world seems not only to be in crisis, but in disintegration.

All this resembles a vision of the Apocalypse – and indeed, the Book leaves no illusions: dragons and beasts will come to the surface. But the paradox is that man is not helpless in the face of these events. God did not leave him naked in the face of cosmic catastrophes. He gave him Archangels. Not as “figures of faith” to be worshipped like museum exhibits, but as real companions who help him survive. Michael, Gabriel, and Raphael are present not in the hagiographic past, but in our crisis—and it is now, in the age of algorithms and geopolitical tectonics, that their presence becomes decisive.

Michael is a warrior in a time of collapse – he reminds us that the spiritual struggle has not been canceled, even if the demons’ costumes have changed. Today, the dragon does not stand with a sword, but hides in code, in narratives, in manipulation. Michael stands against this new totalitarianism and empowers people not to capitulate. Gabriel – the herald – breaks through the chaos of messages in which meaning is lost. In an era in which truth has been shattered into billions of “opinions,” Gabriel is the voice that says: one Word still exists and has power.

The truth exists and cannot be silenced. Raphael, on the other hand, a doctor, is indispensable where the fall takes the form of mental wounds: mass depression, loneliness, a culture of suicide. He cannot cure everything with a pill, but he reminds us that “God heals” – even when medicine and psychology have reached the limits of their capabilities.

The historical perspective shows clearly: where angels and the sacred were removed, smoke came. The totalitarian regimes of the 20th century, which tried to build a world without God and without angels, ended in camps and mass murder. Today, the same thing is returning in a soft, technocratic form – not with a whip and a rifle, but with an algorithm and media narrative. But the mechanism is identical: take away a person’s defenders, take away their heralds of meaning, take away their healers – and they will become easy prey.

Angels are not an addition to piety or a decoration of theology. They are a means of survival. In times of collapse, God did not leave man to his own devices. He gave him a guardian, a messenger, and a doctor—companions who stand by our side in the midst of the Apocalypse. Abraham Joshua Heschel reminded us that man does not live in empty space, but in a time marked by the presence of God. The archangels are the guardians of this time: they testify that history is not heading toward nothingness, but toward a decision in which meaning will be revealed.

History is not moving toward the future. History is moving toward a decision. This decision is not abstract; it is akin to choosing whether to look up at the light or stare at the smoke. One gesture, one glance, and the entire axis of history depends on it. History is moving toward the moment when we will either open the door to the angels or be left alone with merciless smoke.

The Apocalypse is therefore not a distant vision, but a choice that takes place here and now — in the heart of every era and every human being. Whether we dare call to Michael, hear Gabriel and accept Raphael’s touch will determine if the time of trial becomes the beginning of a new creation or a descent into a dark abyss from which there is no return.

On every May 3rd, the Catholic Church in Poland celebrates

Our Lady Queen of Poland Day

On May 3-rd 2024, Father Czesław Budek, OFMConv

presented a special Homily in honor of the Virgin Mary Queen of Poland

“I have never abandoned you, my people; I have never taken away my face from you. I am the same as before – your power and strength.” “Bogurodzica” (poem by Maria Konopnicka).

My dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ!

The Virgin Mary stood at the cradle of our nation’s statehood. When the cross erected by Mieszko and Dąbrówka was established on our land, Mary stood under it. From then on, she strives for the Kingdom of her Son to expand in our Homeland. Among the numerous treasures and values the Polish Nation has kept in its hearts for centuries is the ardent devotion and childlike love for the Mother of God. Our forefathers have had recourse to Her protection for a thousand years, in good times and misfortune, in years of war and peace, and have always experienced Her help.

Indeed, Mary herself chose our Nation and declared herself our Queen.

Let’s listen: In Naples, a Jesuit famous for his piety, holiness, and God’s gifts, Father Giulio Mancinelli (1537-1618), a close friend of the Polish king – Sigismund III Vasa. He was a great missionary. He apostled in Europe and covered much of Asia and Africa on foot and had the reputation of being a prophet and a miracle worker. He established many acts of mercy, and numerous conversions were observed wherever he came. Father Giulio was distinguished by great devotion to the Immaculate Conception and Polish saints, especially St. Stanisław, Bishop of Cracow, and St. Stanisław Kostka. He often prayed for Poland.

On August 14, 1608, when Father Giulio Mancinelli, deeply immersed in prayer in the monastery of Il Gesu Nuovo in Naples, wanted to pay the sincerest respect to the Assumption, the Immaculate Virgin with the Child in her arms, covered with royal purple, appeared to him. At her feet knelt St. Stanisław Kostka. Father Giulio had never seen Mary in such great majesty, and he wanted to greet her with a title no one had ever honored her. Then the Blessed Virgin said: “Why don’t you call Me the Queen of Poland? I love this kingdom very much and intend great things for it because its sons have a special love for Me.”

In 1610, Father Giulio set off on foot to Poland as a pilgrim. He wanted to see the country that is the Kingdom of Mary. At 73, he took the long, dangerous route from Naples to Cracow.

When he arrived in Cracow on May 8, 1610, he first approached the Wawel Cathedral. While he celebrated Holy Mass for the prosperity of our kingdom, Mary appeared to him again in dazzling majesty and said these words: “I am the Queen of Poland. I am the Mother of this nation, which is very dear to Me, so intercede with Me on its behalf and constantly ask Me for the prosperity of this land, and I will always be merciful to you, as I am now.” Since the time the Virgin Mary appeared to Father Giulio Mancinelli, our nation’s devotion to the Mother of God has increased. Kings, hetmans, knights, townspeople, and all the common people often entrusted themselves to Her as servants and slaves.

On the Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in 1628, Cracow decorated the spike of the tower of St. Mary’s Church with a gold-plated crown. In this way, the town was the first to give external expression to the faith in Mary’s reign over the nation. In the 17th century, many storms passed over Poland, but it was also given many signs of the Queen’s special protection. Mary was still waiting for the state and the entire nation to be offered to her.

When Poland seemed to be perishing under the onslaught of the Swedish Deluge and the king was in exile, the dejected Polish bishops reported to the Pope: “We will perish if God does not have mercy on us.” Pope Alexander VII replied in writing with full force: “No! Mary will save you! She is the Polish Queen. Dedicate yourselves to her, offer yourselves to her, proclaim her Queen, after all, she wanted it herself.” And then John Casimir, King of Poland, proclaimed her Queen of Poland and placed all of Poland under her protection on April 1, 1656.

Mary the Queen does not speak to us from the throne. Although she “sits” on Jasna Góra Hill, she is with us like a Mother with her children. She wants to be close to our joys and sorrows. As the Mother of Christ, she knew adversity, loneliness, misunderstanding, and sacrifice for other people. She, as Queen, teaches us this. Her sensitivity and kindness put us to shame.

We are constantly concerned about our own needs, forgetting that there are others next to us who need help. Modern man wants to rule and command, but he cannot listen and serve. Her royalty is expressed in service to God and humanity. Let it be a commitment and a guide for us…

On May 3, the day of the Feast of Our Lady Queen of Poland, we also honor the memory of the Constitution of May 3 (1791).

This holiday is a symbol of how closely the fates of the Church and the Homeland have become intertwined and how they interpenetrate each other. They cannot be separated from each other. This would result in a loss of identity. We would forget about our roots. Indeed, over a thousand-year-old relationship between our Homeland and God is indicated by the Constitution of May 3rd, which proclaimed its innovative legal solutions “In the Name of God in the Holy Trinity.” It was a sign of a new beginning for future generations, which, despite all odds, would lead to change, growth, hope, repair of consciences…

But Poland at that time doubted its strength. There was much evidence of this. Judas’ silver pieces of betrayal filled the treasuries of many people holding essential state positions. The egoism of individuals and interest groups neglected the affairs of the country and the nation. What was Polish, what was family, what grew out of the native tradition, and the faith of the fathers was not valued.

However, we must not generalize. After all, there was another Poland. The one who founded the Bar Confederation (the Pulaski Family) in defense of the lost independence and the threatened holy faith. There was Poland of the reform camp, which undertook the work of renewal. Poland of the Third of May Constitution. Indeed, the Constitution of May 3rd sounded like a bell of fear, like a call to sober up. We know the sequel: the Targowica Confederation betrayal, the suppressed Kościuszko Uprising, the Third Partition… But the soul of the nation lived on in the spirit of the May 3rd Constitution.

Today’s celebration of Our Lady Queen of Poland and the commemoration of the Polish Constitution of May 3rd are vocations for all of us.

We are children of God, but we follow the roads of our earthly Homeland – Poland. Today’s Marian celebration is also a call to love the Homeland – the Earthly Mother. It is the natural environment of every human being. It provides the necessary “oxygen” of culture, language, and consciousness. It also shapes human hearts and consciences. “The Homeland is a space saturated with signs of culture and civilization that create our identity,”  said Karolina Lanckorońska.

And today? Poor knowledge of history, “long weekends”, trips to supermarkets or out of town, fewer and fewer national flags in our homes… The understanding of tradition and the shape of the past is becoming increasingly weaker. This is where we can assume – the indifference to the May 3rd holiday and values coming from this anniversary that this day brings. Indifference to the past destroys patriotism, and this is what we should fear the most. And our Homeland still needs help. Today, Poland needs sacrifice to build the common good, not pursue one’s interests.

Enough of the benefits of the selfishness of individuals and groups! Let’s clear our consciences. Let us be reconciled with God and among ourselves. Poland needs great prayer. During prayer, we are more united and closer to each other. This was shown by the time of the death and burial of St. John Paul II in 2005 and his beatification and canonization. Then we were sad and cried, but we were united in pain and with each other. But later, we were smiling, ready to help each other. We were united under one symbol: the red and white flag.

Brothers and sisters! Today’s ceremony is a call to all of us to take responsibility for everything that constitutes Poland. It is also a challenge, especially for young people. The future of the Church and the Homeland in the new century and millennium lies in our hands.

And remember… “I have never abandoned you, people; I have never taken away my face from you. I am the same as before – your power and strength.” – “Bogurodzica” (poem by Maria Konopnicka).

Amen!

Polish National Broadcasting Council (KRRiT) Chairman M. Świrski
on the fining of Radio Zet:
Fake news caused concern!

wPolityce.pl. We have learned today that you decided to fine EuroZet. Why so?

Maciej Świrski, Chairman of the National Broadcasting Council: Let’s start from the other side. Put yourself in the following situation… Let’s say you are an ordinary media consumer in Poland. You find out first on Twitter, then through a series of information on the pages of EuroZet, and then through a radio broadcast and the nationwide coverage of all the media that, without the knowledge of the Polish security services, the American special services or the secret service ‘smuggled’ President Zelensky through Polish territory during his trip to the United States because they had lost confidence in the Polish security services. And what do you feel?

Astonishment, dismay and, of course, concern for the safety of the country and myself, since the American secret service has lost confidence in the Polish security services.

Do you try to verify this information or do you believe it?

With such wide and far-reaching spread of information, I most probably believe it.

Please be aware that this is not a possible scenario of some hypothetical event. This kind of announcement has been made public by RadioZet. If it were true, it would mean that Poland is indeed in some kind of dramatic situation, because the Polish security services are not worthy of the trust of the American secret service, the security services of our principle ally. And this is happening in a situation of a hybrid war, at least an informational war, and in a situation of a real war threat.

And what was the truth?

I put this question to the Polish security services, specifically through the ministerial coordinator for special services. And I received the answer that it was a lie and that none of what Radio Zet described had occurred. I also asked Minister Mariusz Kamiński whether Radio Zet had at least asked the minister or any of the Polish security services about this matter. And here I received the answer that no one had asked any of the services for a comment. There was no such contact from EuroZet journalists. In turn, when EuroZet was asked during the investigation about the sources of the information it had provided, it refused to answer, hiding behind the protection of these sources. Nor did it answer the question of whether it had asked the Polish authorities or the minister to confirm its information.

That is, the truth of the matter is as follows: in a war situation, when Poland is involved in supporting Ukraine, information from unknown sources, not based on the truth, nor verified, appears in the Polish media, which undermines the confidence of citizens in the secret services of our state, in their professionalism and in relations with an ally. I would like to remind you that such false news is simply fake news.

I would also like to remind you that Article 12 of the Press Law Act states that a journalist is obliged to exercise special care and diligence in the collection and use of press material, especially to check compliance with the truth and indicate the source.

This was not done in this case?

As I said, I asked the broadcaster whether its journalists had contacted the subject of the story about the matter, in accordance with the aforementioned Article 12, as well as Article 6 of the Press Law, Act which states that the press is obliged to provide true representation of passing events. And asking the story broadcaster its opinion on the matter in question is one of the basic principles of journalism and journalistic integrity. If there had been at least an attempt at such contact, if there had been journalistic integrity – there would not have been this piece of fake news, there would not have been this whole affair.

In general, all of Eurozet’s writings on this issue show a complete misunderstanding of what the problem is – journalistic integrity in a situation of reporting on matters of state security. I do not accept the idea that the broadcaster knowingly published a lie that undermines our citizens’ confidence in the state’s ability to govern its territory.

And that is why EuroZet was punished – for broadcasting such a programme?

Yes. For broadcasting a programme that contains a lie, a message that is not based on the truth, i.e. a breach of journalistic integrity, which violates not only the Press Law Act to which the Broadcasting Act refers, but also the Polish raison d’état. I imposed a fine of PLN 476,000 on this broadcaster, which is half of the fees it paid for the frequencies it used.

Why is the fine so high?

The amount of the fine is so high because the false, unconfirmed broadcast (which is not true information) and the fact that it had a very wide media resonance caused additional public concern.

The fake news broadcast by Radio Zet appeared in the national coverage of all the media. It became part of the hybrid war waged by Russia and Belarus against Poland, the leitmotif of which is to undermine the sense of responsibility of the authorities, to raise concerns about border security, and to ridicule Polish efforts to strengthen the country’s defences, including the effectiveness of the Polish security services, the Border Guard and the Polish Army.

Despite a year and a half of full-scale war in Ukraine, which has revealed the true face of Russia and the intentions of its authorities, despite an even longer hybrid war on the Polish-Belarusian border – because that is what the constant flood of people from Africa and Asia that Russia and Belarus are dragging in really is – there are still many who fail to see how serious a threat Russia poses to Poland and how much it wants to destabilise Poland. This is a real threat, and not one that is relegated to the future, but one that is happening right here and now.

All of us Poles need prudence and unity, a sense of community, even if we are divided by many things. This is where the media can do a lot – by providing reliable information and not seeking sensationalism. Unfortunately, often, far too often, for the sake of ‘clickability’ or ‘ratings’ and ‘listenership’, because of their own political preferences, their preference for the interests of other countries or even the European Union over the interests of their own country, and finally out of sheer stupidity, the media, instead of providing reliable information, try to shape opinions by stirring up violent emotions or even pitting one against the other. They divide rather than unite. This is always reprehensible, but in the situation in which Poland finds itself in as a frontline country, a logistical hub for Ukraine, and therefore at the very least an obvious target for Russia’s disinformation activities, it is unacceptable and reprehensible.

This is not just a Polish problem. Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia and other former ‘breakaway’ states that are still of interest to Russia have similar problems. I am a historian, and the history of the 20th century in our part of Europe is particularly close to my heart. So I know Russia’s ways well, and they have not changed – only the technical possibilities and tools have changed.

But the Press Law Act does mention the watchdog role of the media. If the media expose some irregularities, this is a welcome, positive action. So why are you imposing a fine in this case?

Because in this particular case EuroZet did not really expose the irregularities that existed, the journalists did not expose anything. No. They gave fabricated, false information. They created a false news story. This is typical fake news, which creates confusion in the infosphere, misleads citizens and, as it spreads, creates what I can call an ‘informational smog’. Why did they do this? Perhaps it was simply to increase the number of listeners, to increase the number of hits on websites and social media, because of course this fake news has also spread on the Internet.

Fake news is a threat to Poland, especially fake news that affects the security of the country, its defence capabilities or the capabilities of the Polish security services. Russia has been conducting disinformation operations against Poland for years, and what happened at Radio Zet fits exactly into this context. Poland is in danger of being attacked by Russia, and Russia is talking about it directly. I remember that Putin openly said that he would invade Ukraine. Nobody believed it, but Russia did invade Ukraine.

In the same way, Putin says openly that Russia will remind Poland to whom it owes the so-called recovered western territories. We are in a dangerous situation and, quite simply, the media need to be particularly sensitive in terms of respect, respect for the Polish raison d’état. The news reported by Radio Zet endangered Poland’s security, therefore the punishment is commensurate with the seriousness of the offence. Suffice it to say that this type of behaviour will be vigorously pursued by the regulatory authorities. This is not a trivial matter, it is about the security of the state and the security of all of us.

And what about freedom of speech?

Freedom of speech does not mean the freedom to lie. It is time to do something about about the many years of silence on fake news and untruthful content in the electronic media. If there is no reaction to lies, there is an inflation of the meaning of ‘the word’, there is a social desensitisation to lies, not only in the media sphere, but also in social life. And in the end it turns out that you cannot believe anyone or anything. Hence the low level of social capital in Poland. And the disappearance of social capital leads to the disintegration of the community. All the media present in Poland, including the commercial ones, must finally respect the basic values that are precious to our nation – such as our statehood, as well as the family, human dignity, the Christian system of values (which is enshrined in both the law and the Constitution). And truth, as a value that is at the basis of all thought, because truth is bound to reality.

At this point, a few words should be said about a phenomenon that was present in Poland under communism and is now returning with a vengeance – I call it ‘semantic theft’. It is the substitution of new meanings for words that have always been clearly understood by the community. The process of semantic theft involves giving words a new meaning, often the opposite of their previous meaning. During the communist occupation, especially at the beginning, the communist party was called a democratic force, the communist dictatorship was called a democracy, and all those who opposed the communists were called – fascists.

This remark, as I understand it, is not only historical?

Yes. It is also the case today, when the democratically elected and democratically accountable government of the Republic  of Poland is called a ‘regime’ and actions to restore the balance of the message in the public media are called ‘censorship’. ‘Semantic theft’ leads to the manipulation of public discourse, the creation of false narratives or the creation of confusion. Add to this the conformism of many circles and it becomes clear that we are speaking a specific ‘volapik’, a newspeak that transforms the message. At the same time, various issues cannot be called by their proper names because of political correctness, the stigmatisation of the recalcitrant and the exclusion of those who speak a normal language where truth is truth and falsehood is falsehood. This is destroying the community. It must be stopped.

So you want to control the media?

I certainly do not intend to introduce any form of censorship. Instead, I intend to restore the category of truth in the media, because I believe that truth is the foundation of Poland’s information security. I hope that this fine will be the first step towards awakening the minds of all those who, either out of hatred for their political opponents or simply to make money by sensationalising fake news, are throwing additional missiles into the Polish infosphere, which is threatened by Russian disinformation and is destroying citizens’ trust in the state and, incidentally – in the media. It is no coincidence that in a recent survey of trust in various professions, journalism came last. People simply know that the commercial media present in Poland at the moment are not concerned with the truth, but with the money to be made by producing news (not information) to arouse sensation and hatred for those whom various political gurus tell them to hate.

This, of course, includes the brutalisation of the message and language – not only the vulgarity and gutter language of many of those who speak or appear in the commercial media, but also, in my opinion deliberately, treatment of others straight out of communist and Nazi propaganda textbooks – dehumanisation, contempt for individuals, comparing them to wood ticks (as happened on TokFM) and the like. What is more, in the commercial media these phenomena are paid for by advertisers, because the media owe their livelihood to advertising and collected fees.

I call what happened after 2015 in the electronic commercial media the militarisation of media narratives in Poland.

What do you mean by that?

It means that information is used as a weapon in the political game. It is no longer information, but a manufactured message that does not inform, but creates an impulse to generate a mass of narratives based on it, to create context for amplifying some actions, real political actions or – as in the case of Radio Zet’s information – disinformation that strikes at the Polish raison d’état. We remember the articles in Onet that Polish ‘Grot’ carbines were useless, published just before the outbreak of the war in Ukraine. What was the purpose of such a thing?

Many are asking themselves this question.

In my opinion, it may have been in the interest of rival arms manufacturers to scupper Polish contracts in Ukraine so that another manufacturer could step in. Those who did this, those who were behind all the media fuss about the ‘Grot’ carbines, must have known that Poland was arming Ukraine with these rifles because there were preparations to repel a Russian attack. This, by the way, shows the destructive role of disinformation in Polish public life, not only from a political point of view, which damages Poland’s reputation, but also from a business point of view. At the moment in Poland you can hear various slanderous opinions about products or companies in the media, and then after years of litigation it turns out that these opinions were false, but companies attacked in this way have in the meantime lost certain elements of value – contracts, customers, reputation.

After all, you can always ask for misinformation to be corrected.

As I have said many times before – the Press Law Act in Poland needs to be rewritten from scratch, while an amendment introducing a quick correction should be introduced as soon as possible. The situation of the current savagery in the spread of fake news is also due to the fact that the existing legislation on various corrections is practically dead. The situation with Radio Zet and the fake news for which I have now imposed a penalty would not have happened if the Press Law Act had worked in this respect, because journalists would simply have known that there would be an immediate correction and probably a lawsuit for the violation of personal rights. In today’s situation, both the authorities and the public have lost faith that the case will be resolved quickly, given the current state of the judiciary and the media.

Moreover, it is common for media outlets that write lies about individuals or institutions to use the content of litigation materials (e.g. a response to a statement of defence) to further defame and build a hostile narrative against the plaintiffs. On the other hand, Article 3 of the Broadcasting Act gives the Chairman of the KRRiT the power to apply the Press Law Act if the law is violated in the electronic media, in particular Article 6 of the Press Law Act, which reads as follows: ‘The press is obliged to a true representation of passing events’.

As I have already pointed out, in this case, when it comes to this programme on Radio Zet, the proof of unreliability is simple – the failure to ask the relevant institutions, namely the Ministry of the Interior, the Ministerial Coordinator for Special Services or the State Protection Service. The fact that they failed to do so shows an extreme disregard for journalistic principles and is therefore dishonest. So we have two aspects to this case: the lack of integrity required by the Press Law Act and the violation of the Polish raison d’état. The fine I have imposed therefore also has an educational component to it. I am pointing out that broadcasters can emit anything as long as it does not violate the law. And a lack of integrity in the material broadcast is a breach of the law.

And if a broadcaster goes to court?

Of course it will appeal. Every citizen and every organisation operating in Poland has the right to do so. And then, in a public hearing, the broadcaster, through its lawyers, will explain why it presents unverified information and how it understands the Polish raison d’état. And why it believes that convincing Polish citizens that the Polish security services have lost the trust of the American secret services does not undermine citizens’  trust in the institutions of the Polish state in times of war threats. I think the citizens will listen to these explanations with astonishment. I wonder if Radio Zet will broadcast the hearings in this case. It would be good if they did it one-to-one, live, without cuts, so that our citizens can judge who is right here.

Why is it that there is so much fake news in the Polish media, information that is untrue, not based on sources or that does not reliably report what the sources say?

I believe it is the result of a confluence of three factors: first, a drastic lowering of journalistic standards, reinforced by industry ‘awards’. I will come to the reasons for this in a moment. The second factor is simply that some of the commercial media have taken the liberal side of the political debate. And thirdly, external interference with the use of various ‘useful idiots’, as the Bolsheviks called them, which has become common parlance. So why did journalistic standards fall so drastically? Because there was a process of commercialisation of the media, while at the same time cost cuts, and a remedy was found for this changed situation: the pursuit of sensationalism in order to increase revenues. This, in turn, drove people out of the profession who were attached to the ‘old school’ of journalism. Because it’s cheaper?

Checking sources, confirming information, writing a decent text, editing the same text several times – all this takes time, and that means – less money for the publisher or broadcaster. Secondly, today’s state of journalism in Poland is due to the educational disaster caused by the misguided reform of 1999, 24 years ago, from which we are now struggling to recover. The introduction of the gymnasium (secondary school) and the shift in education from the acquisition of knowledge to the dexterity of test-taking, together with the cognitive conformism that went with it, has resulted in a large number of people born around 1987 having basic deficits in associating facts and phenomena, in logical thinking, in searching for information or even in spelling – as is often the case in various headlines or texts on portals.

The lack of a conceptual framework, which until recently every member of the Polish intelligentsia possessed, the uprooting from tradition and history, as well as extreme conformism, are all characteristics that favour the establishment of this phenomenon of media work, which has little to do with journalism. Moreover, people who think independently, who ask questions – not only about the phenomena they are covering, but also to their bosses, for example, why they are demanding an editorial line that is blatantly contrary to common sense or simply the truth – become a nuisance and eventually disappear from the newsroom. They are not fit for the job.

This form of negative selection is reinforced by people who spread a propaganda message hostile to Poland in order to keep themselves in a social or business circle. I am talking about all those awards that have been given to media workers who have described various phenomena in an extremely biased and untrue way. And the tone for all this is set and reinforced by those who know exactly what such methods are used for.

To what end is that?

Their aim is to break up the sense of community, so that Poland ceases to be a community, because without the common cause that is the homeland, our geographical location and the cultural area in which we feel ‘at home’, we are a crowd of individual, obedient consumers who buy what the advertisements tell us to buy. Without a community, and therefore without a state, Polishness will not survive. In this respect, we are in a worse situation than at the end of the 18th century, because then the collapse of the state did not lead to the collapse of culture and heritage. The Polish community survived precisely by drawing on the sources of the cultural heritage that had been created and was still being created. At the moment, unfortunately, there is no certainty that the culture created in Poland is community-generating. I have serious doubts about it.

And the only value that will allow Polishness to survive in such a situation is its own state structure that supports and protects the community. That is why the destruction of the community, the media attacks on the institution of the state with lying, weaponised narratives are so damaging. To put it bluntly – some media in Poland are destroying the Polish political community, creating divisions that negate the basic values of the Polish civilisational heritage. One of the values under particular attack is truth.

As I said in the Sejm (Parliament) during the presentation of the National Broadcasting Council’s (KRRiT) annual report – truth is the correspondence or adequacy between the intellect and reality. In other words, something is true when the intellect understands and reflects reality as it is. Understood in this way, the concept of truth emphasises the objectivity and independence of truth from our beliefs or preferences. It is a quality associated with reality that can be known through the thought process and appropriate reflection of reality in our minds. More generally, truth is about reflecting reality in a way that is consistent with what really happened. The correspondence between description and fact is a key criterion for judging the truthfulness of a statement or proposition. And also in the work of journalists.

This creates so-called bubbles, one can say powerful groups, in which there is no clash with another vision of events, and often no clash with the truth at all.

The fact that the media keep presenting informational materials that have nothing to do with reality means that the public, the citizens, begin to live in an alternative world that is different from the real, tangible reality. If we add to this the phenomenon of ‘informational bubbles’, in which entire communities are trapped as a result of the use of social media and the addictive mechanisms present on the Internet, we have a complete picture of the threats to the Polish community, which can only defend itself thanks to the existence of the state, and a strong state, which can oppose destructive phenomena.

From this statement it seems that the priorities of the President of the National Broadcasting Council (KRRiT) are shifting towards ensuring informational security?

Not so much shifting as complementing. They are being expanded to include a section that has existed but has not been enforced. Article 3 of the Broadcasting Law, which delegates to the Press Law Act is very clear. Matters not regulated by the law are regulated by the Press Law Act. The chairman is obliged to react if he learns that there is a possibility of a breach of the law. There is no mention in the law that the chairman can react if he feels like it. He must react if there is a suspicion of a violation of the law, including the Press Law Act.

I repeat: freedom of speech is not freedom to lie.

Judge: Linking the murder to politics is an over-interpretation”

The Polish opposition has openly blamed the governing Law and Justice party and the public media for the death of Paweł Adamowicz, Mayor of the City of Gdańsk.

Stefan Wilmont has been sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of Gdańsk Mayor Pawel Adamowicz. On each anniversary of Adamowicz’s death, the opposition and the media have stoked the narrative that PiS and TVP were responsible for the local government official’s tragic death. Tusk himself argued that “the big PiS state machine tried to make people believe” that Adamowicz was “the embodiment of evil.”

In rendering the final judgment in this case, the chairwoman of the court, Aleksandra Kaczmarek, explicitly pointed out that “just as the case in question was not a political matter, neither was the defendant’s motivation. Associating this murder with politics is an over-interpretation resulting from public commentary on the case, not from the defendant’s actual convictions.”

“Paweł Adamowicz was murdered, here in Gdańsk, because for long weeks and months not only anonymous hecklers somewhere on the Internet, but the huge state machine of the Law and Justice (PiS) tried every day and every week to make people believe that Paweł Adamowicz was the embodiment of evil.

– argued Donald Tusk even as recently as January 13, 2023 – the fourth anniversary of Adamowicz’s death. At the time, the PO leader met with young people in Gdansk’s Old Town Hall.

On the other hand, the mayor of Gdańsk, Aleksandra Dulkiewicz, has already started her games, using the conviction of Stefan Wilmont by saying: ‘And the factory of contempt and hatred continues to work, pissing on those who think differently.

The Mayor of Gdansk Adamowicz was not a victim of political murder!

“The link between the attack and politics is an over-interpretation.”

The presiding judge, Aleksandra Kaczmarek, in justifying the verdict against Adamowicz’s killer, explicitly pointed out that “linking the assassination to politics is an over-interpretation,” – that completely contradicts the narrative of the opposition led by Donald Tusk.

“Stefan Wilmont is characterized by a tendency to satisfy needs and resolve emotional conflicts through aggressive and demonstrative behavior and reactions, often against authority or power. He tends to experience feelings of bitterness and anger towards the whole world for real and imagined wrongs. In his view, the mayor of Gdańsk, Paweł Adamowicz, was symbolically responsible for the wrongs he had suffered. As a result, Stefan Wilmont felt justified in killing him. It should be noted, however, that just as the case in question was not a political one, neither was the defendant’s motivation. The association of the murder with politics is an over-interpretation resulting from public commentary on the case and not from the defendant’s actual beliefs,” stressed the judge.

“The extremity of his views was independent of any specific political circumstances. He was looking for an explanation for his sense of injustice. There is no evidence that the defendant was accompanied by obsessive thoughts about the victim of the attack, i.e. Paweł Adamowicz. In view of the above, it is necessary to point out that Stefan Wilmont’s behavior deviated grossly from accepted patterns of behavior, considering that every murder is a violation of such a pattern of behavior. Indeed, there is an element of revenge here that has no real justification. What makes the decision to kill by Stefan Wilmont particularly reprehensible is that Paweł Adamowicz had nothing to do with the person of the accused, let alone with his previous conviction. (…) He was a random person who, in the defendant’s mind, symbolized the original source of the damage he perceived, i.e., the justice system in Gdańsk and the Civic Platform (PO). He was also, in the defendant’s mind, an important person, whose killing would have had a special effect,” said Judge Aleksandra Kaczmarek.

Wesołych Świąt Bożego Narodzenia!

The Polish people wish you Merry Christmas

Among Poles, wherever they are in the world, the most significant, most beloved, and most beautiful holiday is Christmas Eve known as Wigilia.

Wigilia

Wigilia is a solemn celebration of the birth of Christ that begins when the first star, known as the GWIAZDKA, appears in the sky on Christmas Eve.

That is when the family members and friends gather at the Christmas table and the host begins the ceremony by sharing Opłatek with all those gathered around the white-clothed table with special vegetarian dishes. The dress code for Wigilia is strict.

The Wigilia dinner differs from other evening meals.  There is always a thin layer of hay under the white tablecloth in memory of the Godchild in the manger. An extra place is always set at the table for the unexpected guest. This belief stems from the ancient Polish adage, “A guest in the home is God in the home.”

OPŁATEK   (Oplatek)

the Polish Christmas Eve Wafer, a crumb of love, a sign of reconciliation.

Before sitting down at the white-clothed table, people break and exchange morsels of Oplatek with each other together with best wishes. Blessings, greeting, and best wishes for health, wealth, and happiness strengthen the bond of unity between family members gathered at the table.

The Oplatek, a thin wafer similar to the altar bread, is meant to remind families of the Eucharistic bread at Mass and the presence of God among us.  Oplatek symbolizes the link in the unbroken chain of One Body, One Bread, One Christ, and One Church. Oplatek also encourages forgiveness and reconciliation. The sharing of Oplatek arouses feelings of kinship, friendship, and bonding, giving us a deep sense of meaning and belonging, and strengthening our families.  The sharing of Oplatek at Wigilia enables us to connect spiritually with loved ones far away. They symbolically share with us their love and longing by sending us Oplatek for the Wigilia dinner table together with their Christmas card.

The sharing of Oplatek on Christmas Eve originated in Poland in the 10th century and by the 17th century spread widely.   The tradition of sharing “Opłatek” on Christmas Eve was part of the  Polish nobility’ culture that spread throughout the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth and neighboring countries.

In the aftermath of the 19th-century partitions of Poland by Russia, Prussia, and Austria, Oplatek gained profound patriotic meaning, as the common wish during sharing of “Opłatek” became the wish for Poland to regain its independence.

The sharing of “Opłatek” helped the Polish people survive the German and Soviet extermination machines of the 20th century.  Sharing of Oplatek spreads beyond families and friends, reaching the workplace and public space.

Kolędy

After Wigilia dinner, the time comes to sing Polish Christmas Carols called the KOLĘDY while the children wait impatiently around the Christmas tree or CHOINKA for the Polish Santa Claus called Mikołaj who brings Christmas gifts and distributes them to the enthusiastic crowd. Polish Christmas Carols or KOLĘDY are numerous and beautiful, especially when sung in Polish parishes at PASTERKA. One of the most beloved Polish Christmas Carols is Lulajże Jezuniu. Other popular Kolędy are: Bóg się rodzi, Przybieżeli do Betlejem, Gdy śliczna Panna syna kołysała, etc.

Pasterka

Once the presents are unpacked and properly admired, everybody goes to the Church for the midnight mass called PASTERKA, which means the Shepherds Watch. People believe that while the congregation is praying, peace descends on the snow-clad, sleeping earth. During that holy night, the humble companions of men – the domestic animals – assume voices. But only the innocent of the heart may hear them.

Prof. Grzegorz Górski

A few months ago I wrote that in the face of a failure in the war with Ukraine, Russia would be forced to generate a number of additional conflicts – hard blows. For only in this way it can force the “Collective West” into a “general settlement.”  This way Russia could achieve a minimum of goals in Ukraine, which the West – wanting to finally “end these spilling conflicts” – will sell without a blink of an eyelid.

Despite the recapture of Kherson by the Ukrainians, the Russians have almost completely paralyzed telecommunications and communication in this country with a series of rocket attacks, and most Ukrainians are without electricity. At the same time, the Russians not only provoked strong tensions in Moldova but also deprived the country of electricity and other energy resources. There were also “problems with oil and gas supplies to Hungary”.

IF YOU THINK THAT A MISSILE ATTACK ON POLAND IS A MISTAKE, YOU ARE DEEPLY WRONG.

Russia went ahead with the plan I described above with the full energy spurred by the defeat suffered at the G20 Summit. She couldn’t wait any longer.  Meanwhile…

BBC : “Missiles land in Poland, killing two”

CNN : “Missiles reportedly land in Poland, killing two”

The BBC’s security correspondent, before even the Russians declared the case to be a “provocation to escalate” (without specifying by whom, of course), already knows that “this doesn’t appear to be a deliberate attack”. There are already voices that “the matter needs to be clarified”. It is best to set up an international commission and investigate. The “Collective West” would like to have it “examined” forever. It’s a road to nowhere.

Back in March, Stoltenberg said that there were no blueprints for NATO’s response to such situations. We know this because Poland, Lithuania, and Latvia made serious attempts to activate NATO’s Art. 4 when our borders from Belarus were attacked. These attempts were not “received positively.”

Our anticipation of the allies’ reactions will only encourage Russia to take further action. I’d love to be wrong, but on the next Russian move a couple of rockets will fly – sorry – they’ll just land farther away.

Today, the entire state of our air forces should be put on full alert and permanently monitor the entire eastern-northern border.

Today, a decision should be made on the deployment of the division from Żagań or Szczecin to the Masurian region.

Today, we should announce maneuvers of the Polish Navy and Air Force in the Baltic Sea to close air access to Królewiec.

Today, we should demand immediate support for our air and missile defense from our most important allies (US and UK).

Only with such actions, we will respond to Russia in an understandable way. But more importantly, we will force our allies to take further decisive action before Russia’s escalating drive spreads even wider and more painfully. And let us remember that after February 24 we did not wait for the West to define the Russian attack on Ukraine, but we stirred up both the Americans and Europe by advocating for the right position in assessing Putin’s aggression.

If anyone still has any doubts about where Russia wants to go in the near future, let them remember the words of President Lech Kaczyński killed in Smolensk, with the only difference being that the Russians decided to change the order of attack. They decided that it was not worth wasting time on the Baltic states but it was necessary – by striking Poland – to paralyze the entire system of support for Ukraine’s military effort. We shall not underestimate this fact.

Now every hour counts…

When on 3 May 1791 the Four-Year Sejm also called the Great Sejm adopted The Government Act of the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth later known as the Constitution of 3 May, the Polish-Lithuanian state became the Europe’s first and the world’s second, after the United States, that passed the founding law. For its time, it was a progressive and bold legal act which initiated a number of reforms. Edmund Burke – an Irish philosopher and one of the leading politicians of modern conservatism called 3 May Constitution “the purest public good ever given to humanity.”

This year Poland celebrates the 230th anniversary of adopting the Constitution of 3 May by the last King of Poland and Grand Duke of Lithuania Stanisław August Poniatowski. The Constitution sought to implement a more effective constitutional monarchy, introduced political equality between townspeople and nobility, and placed the peasants under the government’s protection, mitigating the worst abuses of serfdom. It banned pernicious parliamentary institutions such as the Liberum Veto.

The 3 May Constitution also introduced the principle of the tripartite separation of power, and reformed the existing political system ensuring more equal treatment of all nationalities within the Commonwealth. The Constitution also expressed the nation’s patriotic will to defend Poland’s independence following its first partition by Austria, Prussia and Russia in 1772.

The Commonwealth’s neighbors reacted with hostility to the adoption of the Constitution. King Frederick William II broke Prussia’s alliance with the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. He joined with Catherine, the Empress of  Russia, and the Targowica Confederation of anti-reform Polish magnates to defeat the Commonwealth in the Polish-Russian War of 1792.

Thus, the ambitious reform plans which had meant to be implemented based on the new constitution were shattered. As a legal act, the Constitution of 3 May formally ceased to be in force in November 1793 by virtue of the resolution by the Sejm that was summoned under the dictate of Russia and Prussia in Grodno. On the same year, the two states partitioned Poland for the second time.

The Polish-Lithuanian state disappeared from Europe’s map for over 120 years after the 3rd Partition in 1795 conducted by Austria, Prussia and Russia. This act, violating all principles of international law, was erased only after the World War I, when Poland and Lithuania regained independence as two sovereign states.

When Poland regained its independence, the anniversary of adopting the 3 May Constitution was celebrated as a national holiday, since 1919. From 1939, under German and Soviet occupation as well as under the rule of communist authorities in Poland, the 3 May Day holiday was banned, but most Poles continued to observe it. In the sovereign Republic of Poland, May 3 has been restored as a National Holiday since 1990.

The Cud nad Wisłą, or Miracle on the Vistula, was no miracle. It was a hard-fought battle, which took place in August 1920 near Warsaw and ended in a decisive Polish victory over the Red Army of Soviet Russia. It was won by the skill, discipline and determination of the Polish defenders; by the patriotic spirit of a large number of volunteers; and by Marshal Józef Piłsudski’s brilliant counterattack, which stopped the Soviet offensive in its tracks.

Only afterward were theories put forward by Piłsudski’s nationalist opponents suggesting that victory should be ascribed either to General Maxime Weygand or to Providence. The height of the battle happened to coincide with the Feast of the Assumption when many Polish Catholics prayed for their country’s salvation. So, people naturally felt their prayers had been answered.

Suppressed knowledge

As a student of Modern History at Oxford, I never heard a word about the Polish-Soviet War; it had no place on the intellectual radar screens of British historians. But I began to mend my ignorance on the subject as soon as I visited Poland in the early 1960s.

An early source of information was my future father-in-law, Professor Marian Zieliński, who lived in Kęty near Bielsko. He explained that Communist censorship was suppressing knowledge of the Soviet defeat, adding that everyone knew what had really happened thanks to the experiences of their families. He himself had fought in the war as a teenager and went on to describe some of his amazing adventures.

In the summer of 1920, the young Marian Zieliński was a 16-year old pupil in the gymnasium of Tarnów, a town well known for its recent patriotic support for Piłsudski’s Polish Legions. As the school year was finishing, he and most of the boys in his class skipped school, walked the 300 km to Warsaw, found a recruiting office, lied about their age, and joined the army.

There was no time for formal training. The “Bolshevik hordes” were already on the march. The young volunteers were assigned to the Siberian Brigade, which consisted of trained Polish conscripts from the disbanded Tsarist Army and which had escaped from Russia via the Far East; each of them was paired up with a hardened veteran, who was ordered to teach the teenager on the way to the front how to load, fire and clean their heavy English rifles. They were sent to the fortress of Modlin, where General Władysław Sikorski’s Fifth Army was deployed.

Then, following Sikorski’s successful action on the River Wkra, they pushed northwards towards the Prussian frontier, where, near Chorzele, they ran into the “Red Cossacks” of Ghai Khan. This was to be Marian’s baptism of fire. Kneeling behind a thorn bush, he struggled desperately with his jammed rifle, as a saber-wielding Cossack charged.

Closing his eyes from fright, he heard the galloping hooves, the swish of the whirling saber and the single shot fired by his veteran companion. The Cossack fell dead from the saddle; and the riderless horse rolled over them both, man and boy.

For me, who had never fired a gun in anger, the combination of these romantic tales with the frisson of “taboo” proved irresistible. In the eyes of a budding historian, there is nothing so attractive as the forbidden fruit of officially denied events. Polish history in the years 1918-21 became the first topic of my academic research, and eventually of my very first book.

In those days, I cannot remember anyone talking of the “Polish-Bolshevik War”. English books talked (inaccurately) of the “Russo-Polish War”, usually very cursorily and invariably with the assumption that it was Poland which had attacked Russia and not vice versa. Official Polish textbooks, if they mentioned it at all, wrote of the “Wojna Polska-Radziecka”, which, they said, was “pursued in the interests of the great Polish landowners”, which “brought enormous losses to the country”, and which ended mysteriously after the Red Army chose to retreat.

For myself, seeing that the new-born Polish Republic was confronted by the armed forces of three Soviet republics – Soviet Russia, Soviet Belarus and Soviet Ukraine – I have always called it the “Polish-Soviet War”, and kept to the formula in my book, White Eagle, Red Star, published in in 1972.

The Polish-Soviet War

The war between Poland and the Soviet republics lasted from February 1919 to the ceasefire of October 1920 and was formally ended by the Treaty of Riga signed on 18 March 1921. (Incidentally, it was concluded prior to the formation of the Soviet Union in 1923. Another frequent mistake is to say that Poland was fighting the Soviet Union.) It is important to stress, however, that the fighting occurred in two distinct phases, and that each phase had its specific characteristics.

The 1919 campaign was essentially territorial. In the first year of its existence, the Polish Republic, like most of the neighboring states, was struggling to establish its frontiers. Further East, the Russian Civil War between “Reds” and “Whites” was in full flow, and in many non-Russian provinces of the former Tsarist Empire, complicated three-sided contests were in progress between the Bolsheviks, the Whites and local national movements.

Piłsudski sought in vain to form a federation of like-minded border states, so concentrated instead on securing a solid block of territory. He rebuffed the “White” General Denikin, who thought absurdly that the “Whites” could co-opt the Poles while denying them self-determination. He took control of West Ukraine (East Galicia) including Lwów, occupied both Wilno and Minsk, and sent troops across the frozen Dvina to help the Latvians.

After a brief interval in the winter, the campaign of 1920 was to assume a totally different, ideological character. So long as the Bolsheviks were preoccupied with the Civil War, they had nothing in mind beyond their survival. But, having conquered the Russian heartland in the course of 1919, they began to heed the dictates of their ideology, which told them that the Communist Revolution should be exported from Russia to Germany, Marx’s homeland, at the first opportunity.

“The Red Bridge”

According to Marxist theory, Russia’s largely peasant society was unsuited to a genuine proletarian revolution, and most Bolshevik theorists, like Nikolai Bukharin, accepted that their movement’s long-term interests demanded a link-up with more developed countries, where a substantial industrial proletariat existed.

After long hesitations, Lenin now cast caution aside, believing that the moment had come for expansion. Trotsky, the Commissar for War, objected, knowing the Red Army’s limitations, and proposing that the first wave of revolutionary expansion should be directed against Asia, not Europe. But he was overruled. For Lenin also assumed (wrongly) that the Red Army would be welcomed by the oppressed workers and peasants along the way. In this scenario, Poland occupied the “Red Bridge” which the Red Army had to cross on the route from Russia to Germany.

The winter of 1919-20 was a critical time. Lenin was calling loudly for peace with Poland, while blatantly building up the Red Army’s presence in Russia’s western regions. Writing about this fifty years ago, I talked about Piłsudski’s “sound instincts” in resisting Lenin’s blandishments. We now know that he was receiving detailed reports from Polish radio intelligence which provided concrete evidence of the Bolsheviks’ bad faith.

As the new campaigning season approached, Piłsudski realized that doing nothing would be fatal, and his response was twofold. Firstly, he opened an alliance with Semeon Petlura’s Ukrainian Directorate, and secondly, in the company of Petlura’s Ukrainian divisions, sought to disrupt Lenin’s preparations by moving on Bolshevik-occupied Kyiv. The Polish Army marched eastwards in late April, and within three weeks was welcomed in Kyiv with flowers.

Predictably, the Soviet propaganda machine reacted furiously, denouncing “Polish imperialism” and deluging western capitals with strikes and placards demanding “HANDS OFF RUSSIA”. As usual, western opinion misjudged the realities.

Few westerners knew that Kyiv was no longer part of Russia or that Bolshevism could be a threat to anyone. Indeed, in that imperial era, many people thought that the idea of national independence set a dangerous precedent. British trade unions followed the Communist lead, identifying Piłsudski as the aggressor and vowing to block all military supplies to Poland.

Although the Kyiv operation gained a little time, it did not go well. Ukraine was still riven by numerous armed factions, and Petlura failed to assert his overall authority. Before long, the Bolsheviks were assembling a powerful strike force led by the formidable “Konarmia” of Semyeon Budyonny, which was withdrawn from the front fighting Denikin’s “Whites”. The Polish garrison in Kyiv became increasingly isolated and decided to withdraw. As one veteran put it, “We ran all the way to Kyiv, and ran all the way back.”

Bolshevik propaganda was not without effect in Poland. Although Polish society was still overwhelmingly rural, and Poland’s prime minister in 1920, Wincenty Witos, leader of the Polish People’s Party (PSL), was an archetypal peasant from Tarnów, the hostile Communist slogan of “Pan’skaya Pol’sha“, or “Poland of the Landlords”, had strong historical overtones, and resonated widely, especially among Belarusians and Ukrainians in the eastern borderlands (Kresy).

Furthermore, the Bolsheviks appealed strenuously to the large Jewish community, urging them to desert their “Polish masters”. Those appeals fell largely on deaf ears; most Polish Jews were religiously conservative, spurned right-wing Zionists and left-wing Communists alike, and remained loyal to Poland. Even so, the unfair stereotype of Żydokomuna (Judeo-Communism) took root, and the Polish army took needless precautions by interning considerable numbers of Jewish soldiers.

Red Army offensive

Today, with more than 50 million people killed each year around the world in their prenatal phase of development, when attacks on the family and the natural identity of marriage by LGBT ideologists continue ceaselessly, and last but not least, when children at schools are being indoctrinated against the will of their parents, there is an urgent need for professional lawyers that are willing to defend the natural social order.

The establishment of the Ordo Iuris Institute for Legal Culture in 2013 was a response to this need. Today, after seven years of operation, the lawyers who make up this unique organisation are everywhere where fundamental values are challenged and attacked, and the influence of this Polish think tank on public debate, both in Poland and around the world, is constantly growing.

The first important pillar of Ordo Iuris’ activities is litigation. In courtrooms all over Poland, but also increasingly often in other countries, the Institute’s lawyers defend crucial values. They stand up for families from which officials unjustifiably want to take children away, including those living abroad, for example in Norway, where the notorious Barnevernet office for children is often the cause of much unnecessary suffering for parents and their children.

They stand up for doctors, pharmacists, nurses and midwives who want to pursue their profession in accordance with their conscience and medical knowledge, as well as representatives of other professions who, as a result of pressure from extreme left-wing ideologists, fall victim to harassment or persecution.

The Institute’s lawyers represent many people attacked by left-wing activists and organisations intent on implementing their harmful ideologies. For example, the Institute responded in the well-publicized case of an Ikea employee who was fired for quoting excerpts from the Bible on an employee forum on the matter of homosexuality; the case of a printer who refused to print materials promoting the LGBT ideology, and the case of Professor Ewa Budzyńska from the University of Silesia who was disciplined for referring in her lectures on family sociology to a family model based on marriage between a woman and a man, and for calling a human being in the prenatal stage of development a child. Lawyers of the Ordo Iuris Institute also oppose illegal attacks on public displays of faith and religious symbols. The Institute always provides legal assistance free of charge.

The second very important area of Ordo Iuris’ involvement is its analytical activities. The Institute’s experts prepare draft laws that protect family and fundamental freedoms, submit legal arguments to politicians in Poland and in European institutions, and monitor the activities of public authorities. Currently, no discussion on matters regarding the defence of life, family, marriage, and religious freedom takes place in Poland without the participation of Ordo Iuris’ lawyers. It is particularly important and necessary to involve professional lawyers in defending the right of parents to raise their children in accordance with their own beliefs, and to oppose the corruption of their children at school. The Institute’s activities have been instrumental in blocking many initiatives of LGBT activists who use insidious methods to subject children to vulgar sex education and gender ideology.

The activity of the Institute’s experts at the international level is equally important. They are often the only Polish representatives in European institutions, European scientific bodies and even global bodies such as the European Parliament, the Court of Justice of the European Union, and the United Nations. Efforts to defend the Institute’s core values bear concrete results. For example, at the Nairobi Summit in November, the consistent opposition of the coalition formed in Kenya with the participation of Ordo Iuris led to the blocking of attempts to make abortion a new human right as well as to introduce forced sex education in all countries across the globe. It is worth mentioning that during this event Ordo Iuris was one of only two recognised organisations standing up for natural values worldwide!

Moreover, Ordo Iuris is constantly engaged in defending religious freedom and fighting the ever-growing attacks and persecution of Christians. It is one of the few organisations to monitor this alarming practice and alert international institutions about its growing scale. It has also launched a dedicated online platform (www.cwr.ordoiuris.pl) through which anyone can report cases of discrimination and acts of hatred targeted at religious freedom or freedom of conscience.

Ordo Iuris also conducts scientific and formational activities, including training young lawyers on how to build and keep a good conscience. The Institute organises numerous scientific conferences and lectures conducted by renowned experts, and publishes a number of publications, including a scientific periodical entitled Kultura Prawna [Legal Culture].

Most importantly, Ordo Iuris is independent from external factors and current politics. It intentionally and deliberately does not use any public subsidies or grants that could hinder its independence. Ordo Iuris is sustained only by the support of donors who are committed to its special mission and share the same values. More and more Polish and foreign nationals who believe in the need to protect the foundations of Western civilization are placing increasingly greater hopes in the Ordo Iuris Institute. However, the increase in social expectations is also accompanied by an increase in costs and expenses. As a result, the Institute finds itself in need of material support from as many people of conscience as possible, who in cooperation with Ordo Iuris’ lawyers are ready to defend the most important values. Ordo Iuris – Instytut na rzecz Kultury Prawnej

Jedyna taka organizacja.

Eksperci Instytutu przygotowują projekty ustaw chroniących rodzinę i podstawowe wolności, docierają z prawną argumentacją do polityków w kraju i w instytucjach europejskich oraz monitorują działania administracji publicznej. Działania Instytutu przyczyniły się do zablokowania wielu inicjatyw aktywistów LGBT wykorzystujących podstępne metody zmierzające do poddania dzieci wulgarnej edukacji seksualnej i ideologii gender.

Wysiłek podejmowany w obronie najważniejszych wartości przynosi konkretne owoce – na przykład podczas listopadowego szczytu w Nairobi konsekwentny sprzeciw zawiązanej w Kenii koalicji z udziałem Instytutu doprowadził do zablokowania prób uczynienia z aborcji nowego prawa człowieka i wprowadzenia we wszystkich krajach świata przymusowej edukacji seksualnej.

Utrzymuje się wyłącznie dzięki wsparciu Darczyńców, zaangażowanych w jej wyjątkową misję i podzielających te same wartości.
